Grass Roof Extension

Private Client | West Putney, London

This substantial Edwardian house in West Putney had lost coherence as the result of many years of piecemeal alterations.

The new owners wanted a family friendly layout that focused on the south-facing garden, so full-width glazed doors now connect the existing kitchen/dining room to the garden, with the main cooking island facing the view.

Meanwhile the normally dark centre of the plan conceals a laundry room, the services inevitable for modern life and a top-lit ground floor WC.

A grass roof to the extension ensures that the bedrooms above stay connected to the garden, and a reflective canopy above the glass doors allows these to be left open during showers as well as preventing summer overheating.

Upstairs the L-shaped plan and hipped roof prevented a conventional loft extension, but careful insertion of new steel beams below the hips and a side dormer (Conservation Area friendly) has allowed the whole of the hipped front roof to become a spacious albeit quirky extra bedroom.
